Russian press smears Georgian Economy Minister with 'stripper' accusations The Independent reports today that a photo of current Georgian Economy Minister Vera Kobalia dancing in a bar is being used by the state-controlled Russian media to allege that she has previously worked as a 'stripper'. The photo, apparently obtained from Facebook, shows Ms Kobalia with her sister and three friends. Whilst the Russian media alleges it was taken in a Vancouver strip club, there is no evidence to suggest location, date or the nature of the venue. Ms Kobalia says the photo was taken 10 years ago on holiday in Florida, and insists the image does not support the Russian media's allegations: "If the worst thing that the opposition or anyone else can find about is my old picture from college then I don't see anything wrong with that." These accusations are certainly in part political tactics to paint President Saakashvili in a negative light, and tie in with previous accusations that Ms Kobalia is ill-suited to a ministerial position, lacking in relevant education or experience. It is a shame that the Russian media have also recoursed to interpreting an image of a woman confidently dancing as evidence of previous experience as a 'stripper'. This is a cheap, almost predictable swipe at a female minister who, despite lacking previous political experience, has apparently shown herself to be competent in her role.
