The peacekeepers' cafeteria was completely destroyed and all of their buildings went up in flames.[141][142] Georgian shelling left parts of the capital city in ruins. On August 8, 2008 at about 3:00 AM georgian army launched a rocket attack towards south ossetian positions in Tskhinvali. Some of South Ossetian self proclaimed government buildings, market center were set on fire. Civilian casualties were also reported. (According to Russian Prosecutor’s office 162 civilians were killed during this attack) 4th Brigade began an offensive against south ossetian paramilitaries in Khetagurovo (west of Tskhinvali). 3rd Brigade was located in Eredvi (village in the east of Tskhinvali). At about 6.00 AM Batumi Infantry Brigade with the troops of the Ministry of Interior of Georgia, began main offensive from Nikozi (the south of Tskhinvali). They were stopped by ossetian artillery. Later it was reported by Russian television that russian peacekeepers were providing ossetians the coordinates of georgian troops. At 9.00 AM georgian government decided to launch air attack on Tskhinvali. Air attacks lasted about an hour. At 10.00 AM began second ground offensive and about 12.00 PM Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali. About 30% of the town was under their control.4th Brigade, which should enter Tskhinvali from the west, was stopped by Russian СУ-25 at about 12.30 PM in the west entrance of Tskhinvali. Troops, that entered the town earlier didn’t get support. They came under attack from russian air forces. One tank was destroyed and several soldiers were killed. From 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM the mayor of Tbilisi, Gigi Ugulava announced moratorium on gunfire. During this period, georgian troops left Tskhinvali.At about 6.00 PM Russian ground troops approached the west border of Tskhinvali. They were stopped by the artillery fire from georgian positions. Several russian tanks managed to enter Tskhinvali only at 9.00 PM in the evening.On August 9, 2008 russian troops still had problems in moving towards Tskhinvali. The both roads to the city were under attack from georgian artillery. At about 11.00 AM the convoy of Russian Lieutenant General Anatoly Khrulyov was ambushed by forces of Georgian 2nd Brigade. The General Khrulyov was wounded.On August 10, 2009 at 5.00 AM Georgian President ordered its troops to left positions in Eredvi and Nikozi. 2nd Brigade also left the conflict zone, and Russian troops managed to enter Tskhinvali, and than invade into undisputed georgian territory.
